If there are no lights, follow the procedure in Rule 296 ↗. Stop, look both ways and listen before you cross. If there is a railway telephone, always use it to contact the signal operator to make sure it is safe to cross. Inform the signal operator again when you are clear of the crossing.

Railway Safety : Crossing Without Lights
Step 1 :
Stop , Look , and Listen
Before attempting to cross , you must come to a complete halt and use both sight and sound to check for approaching trains in both directions .
Seek Clearance to Cross
You must contact the signal operator to confirm that no trains are scheduled and that it is officially safe to proceed across the tracks .

Step 2 : Use the Railway Telephone
Locate the on - site railway telephone to establish a direct line of communication with the signal operator .
CLEAR OF TRACKS
Cross the Tracks
Once the signal operator provides clearance , move across the railway crossing promptly and safely .
Confirm You Are Clear
Immediately after crossing , use the telephone again to inform the signal operator that you and / or your vehicle are entirely clear of the tracks .
