Rule 240 ↗
You MUST NOT stop or park on

the carriageway, an emergency area or a hard shoulder of a motorway except in an emergency (see Rules 270 and 271)
a pedestrian crossing, including the area marked by the zig-zag lines (see Rule 191 ↗)
a clearway (see Traffic signs)
taxi bays as indicated by upright signs and markings
an urban clearway within its hours of operation, except to pick up or set down passengers (see Traffic signs)
a road marked with double white lines, even when a broken white line is on your side of the road, except to pick up or set down passengers, or to load or unload goods
a tram or cycle lane during its period of operation
a cycle track
red lines, in the case of specially designated ‘red routes’, unless otherwise indicated by signs. Any vehicle may enter a bus lane to stop, load or unload where this is not prohibited (see Rule 141 ↗).

High - Speed & Through - Traffic Zones

Specialized Lanes & Pedestrian Safety

Specific Markings & Restricted Bays

Motorways & Emergency Areas You must not stop on the carriageway , emergency area , or hard shoulder except in a genuine emergency .

Pedestrian Crossings & Zig - Zags

Stopping is banned on the crossing itself and the surrounding area marked by zig - zag lines to ensure visibility for all users .

Double White Lines No stopping even if there is a broken white line on your side , except for loading / unloading or passenger transit .

Standard Clearways Stopping is prohibited at all times on roads designated as clearways to maintain constant traffic movement .

Cycle Tracks & Lanes You must not stop or park on cycle tracks or in cycle lanes during their periods of operation .

Designated Red Routes

Stopping is prohibited on red lines unless signs indicate otherwise ; however , bus lanes may be entered for loading if not specifically banned .

Urban Clearways Stopping is forbidden during hours of operation , with the sole exception of picking up or setting down passengers .

Tram Lanes Similar to cycle lanes , stopping is prohibited in tram lanes during their specific hours of operation .

Taxi Bays

Parking or stopping is forbidden in areas marked as taxi bays by upright signs and road markings .
