Vehicles with flashing amber beacons. These warn of a slow-moving or stationary vehicle (such as a traffic officer vehicle, salt spreader, snow plough or recovery vehicle) or abnormal loads, so approach with caution. On unrestricted dual carriageways, motor vehicles first used on or after 1 January 1947 with a maximum speed of 25 mph (40 km/h) or less (such as tractors) MUST use a flashing amber beacon (also see Rule 220 ↗).

LEGAL MANDATES FOR OPERATORS
Indicators of Slow or Stationary Hazards Flashing amber beacons warn motoriats that a vehicle is either moving very slowly or has stopped on the roadway .
The " 25 mph " Rule
Any motor vehicle with a maximum speed of 25 mph ( 40 km / h ) or less must use a flashing amber beacon when on unrestricted dual carriageways .
Common Vehicles Using Beacons
These include traffic officer vehicles , salt spreaders , snow ploughs , recovery vehicles , and those carrying abnormal loads .
Required Driver Action : Approach with Caution
Upon seeing amber flashes , drivers must stay alert and prepare to adjust their speed or lane position safely .
Date of Manufacture Requirements
This legal mandate applies to all applicable slow - moving vehicles first used on or after 1 January 1947 .
