Railway telephones. If you are driving a large or slow- moving vehicle, a long, low vehicle with a risk of grounding, or herding animals, a train could arrive before you are clear of the crossing. You MUST obey any sign instructing you to use the railway telephone to obtain permission to cross. You MUST also telephone when clear of the crossing if requested to do so.

Identify Your Risk
Large or Slow - Moving Vehicles
Any vehicle that takes longer than standard traffic to olear the tracks poses a higher risk of being caught by an oncoming train .
Long or Low - Profile Vehicles
Vehicles with a high risk of " grounding " ( bottoming out ) on the raised surface of a crossing must take extra precautions .
Herding Animals
Livestock or other animals being driven across tracks require special coordination with railway authorities .
The Mandatory Procedure
1. Check the Signage
Drivers MUST obey any sign instructing them to use the railway telephone before attempting to cross .
2. Obtain Permission to Cross
Use the provided railway telephone to contact the signaller and receive explicit permission to proceed .

Failure to follow these instructions is a violation of the Road Traffic Act 1988 Section 36 .
3. Confirm You Are Clear If requested by the signaller , you MUST telephone again once you and your vehicle or animals are completely clear of the crossing .
