If an incident involves a vehicle containing dangerous goods, follow the advice in Rule 283 ↗ and, in particular

switch off engines and DO NOT SMOKE
keep well away from the vehicle and do not be tempted to try to rescue casualties as you yourself could become one
call the emergency services and give as much information as possible about the labels and markings on the vehicle. DO NOT use a mobile phone close to a vehicle carrying flammable loads.

Handling Dangerous Goods Vehicle Incidents

Immediate Safety Actions

Eliminate Ignition Sources Switch off all engines and strictly observe a ' No Smoking ' policy to prevent fire or explosions .

Reporting the Incident

Identify Labels and Markings Observe the vehicle's hazardous material labels and markings from a distance to provide accurate info to authorities .

DO NOT ENTER

Maintain Safe Distance

Keep well away from the vehicle and resist the urge to attempt a rescue , as you risk becoming a casualty yourself .

Call Emergency Services Contact emergency responders immediately and provide as much detail as possible about the dangerous goods markings .

Mobile Phone Warning

Never use a mobile phone in close proximity to a vehicle carrying flammable loads to avoid accidental ignition .
