If anything falls from a vehicle on to a motorway or other high-speed road, DO NOT remove the obstruction yourself. Stop in a place of relative safety (see Rule 275 ↗) and call the emergency services on 999.
On other roads, you should only remove obstructions if it is safe to do so.

Under no circumstances should you attempt to recover items that have fallen onto a motorway or high - speed road .
All Other Roads
Assess Safety Before Acting
On standard roads , you may remove obstructions only if it is completely safe to do so .
Find a Place of Relative Safety
Stop your vehicle in a safe location as outlined in Rule 275 before taking further action .
Priority of Safety
If the road conditions or traffic levels make removal dangerous , do not attempt to clear the road yourself .
Contact Emergency Services
Call 999 immediately to report the obstruction so that professional recovery teams can handle the situation .
