Disabled drivers. If you have a disability that prevents you from following the above advice in Rules 277 and 278, you should

switch on your hazard warning lights
stay in your vehicle and keep your seat belt on
call 999 immediately and ask for the police. Alternatively, press your SOS button if your vehicle has one and ask for the police.
If you are deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired, it is recommended that you register for the 999 text service (emergencySMS.net) before making a journey.

Immediate On - Board Safety

Activate Hazard Warning Lights

Immediately switch on your hazard lights to warn other road users that your vehicle is stationary and potentially obstructing traffic .

Remain Inside and Buckled

Stay inside your vehicle and keep your seat belt securely fastened for protection while waiting for assistance .

Call 999 Immediately

Contact the emergency services right away and specifically ask for the police to attend the scene .

Requesting Emergency Assistance

Use the In - Vehicle SOS Button

If your vehicle is equipped with an integrated SOS button , press it to connect directly with emergency services and request police assistance .

Drivers who are deaf , hard of hearing , or speech impaired are recommended to register for the 999 text service at emergencySMS.net .

Register Before You Travel

Ensure your registration with the emergency text service is complete before making any journey to ensure help is accessible in an emergency .
