To rejoin the carriageway after a breakdown from
a hard shoulder, build up speed, indicate and watch for a safe gap in the traffic. Be aware that vehicles, obstructions or debris may be present on the hard shoulder
an emergency area, you MUST use the emergency telephone provided and follow the operator’s advice for exiting the emergency area. A lane may need to be closed so that you can rejoin the carriageway safely.

Build Momentum and Signal
Before merging , build up sufficient speed on the shoulder and use your indicators to signal your intent to traffic .
Mandatory Telephone Use
You MUST use the provided emergency telephone ; this is a legal requirement under Law RTA 1988 sect 36 .
Watch for a Safe Gap
Carefully monitor the live lanes and wait for a clear , safe opening in the traffic flow before moving out .
Follow Operator Instructions You must wait for and follow the specific advice provided by the operator for exiting the area .

Beware of Shoulder Hazards Be alert for potential obstructions , debris , or other stationary vehicles that may be present on the hard shoulder itself .
Potential Lane Closures
To ensure a safe exit , the operator may need to coordinate the closure of a live lane so you can rejoin the carriageway .
