Signs and signals (see ‘Light signals controlling traffic’) are used to warn you of hazards ahead. For example, there may be an incident, fog, a spillage or road workers on the carriageway which you may not immediately be able to see.

Roadside Signs and Hazard Signals
TRAFFIC INCIDENTS: Signals may indicate a crash or vehicle breakdown blocking the lanes ahead .
Signs and light signals are used to warn drivers of hazards located further ahead on the road .
IDENTIFYING HIDDEN DANGERS
Signals are specifically used for hazards that a driver may not be able to see immediately from their current position .
ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS
Warnings are issued for reduced visibility conditions such as heavy fog .
PHYSICAL OBSTRUCTIONS
Drivers are alerted to spiliages on the road or the presence of road workers on the carriageway .
