Cars, goods vehicles not exceeding 2500 kg laden weight, invalid carriages, motorcycles and pedal cycles may be parked without lights on a road (or lay-by) with a speed limit of 30 mph (48 km/h) or less if they are:

at least 10 metres (32 feet) away from any junction, close to the kerb and facing in the direction of the traffic flow
in a recognised parking place or lay-by.
Other vehicles and trailers, and all vehicles with projecting loads, MUST NOT be left on a road at night without lights.

Rule 250 : Can You Park Without Lights ?

YES :

ELIGIBLE VEHICLES & CONDITIONS

Light Passenger & Goeds Vehicles :

includes cars and goods vehicles not exceeding 2500 kg laden weight .

Small & Specialized Transport : Invalid carriages , motorcycles , and pedal cycles permitted under correct conditions .

30 mph Speed Limit or Less : Only on roads or lay - bys with speed limit s 30 mph ( 40 km / h ) .

NO : PROHIBITIONS ( LIGHTS MUST BE USED )

The 10 - Metre Rule :

Must be parked at least 10 metres ( 33 feet ) away from any junction .

Proper Orientation :

Close to the kerb and facing the direction of the traffic flow .

Heavy Vehicles & Trailers : All trailers and vehicles not meeting " light vehicle " criteria must have lights on at night .

Designated Areas : Allowed in a recognized parking place or lay - by .

Projecting Loads : Any vehicle carrying a projecting load is strictly prohibited without lights .

Compliance governed by Laws RVLR reg 24 and CUR reg 62 ( 7 ) .
