Driving Safely in Fog :

A Guide to Rule 234

IMMEDIATE ACTIONS BEFORE ENTRY

Check Your Mirrors

Before entering a fog bank , assess the traffic behind you to ensure you can slow down safely without causing a rear - end collision .

INTERPRETING ROAD SIGNS

Reduce Your Speed

Slow down proactively before you reach the fog to account for the sudden drop in visibility and increased reaction time needed .

Trust the Signs , Even if the Road is Clear

If a roadside sign displays " Fog " do not ignore it just because the current view is clear ; it is a warning of conditions immediately ahead .

Anticipate Drifting Patches

Be prepared for " drifting patchy fog " which can create inconsistent visibility across different stratches of the road .

THE DECEPTION OF CLEARING FOG

The Sudden Bank Risk

Drivers should stay alert for sudden , dense banks of fog that can appear without warning , drastically reducing visibility in seconds .

Avoid Early Acceleration Even if the fog appears to be clearing , remain cautious , as you can suddenly find yourself back in thick fog without notice .
