ONE CROSSING , NOT TWO
Pelican crossings that go straight across the road are legally considered a single crossing unit , even if a central island is present .
The Central Island Exception
Unlike staggered crossings , a straight - line crossing with an island does not split the path into two independent segments .
MANDATORY WAIT FOR PEDESTRIANS
Drivers MUST wait for pedestrians who are crossing from the opposite side of the central island before proceeding .
