THE RED SIGNAL PROTOCOL
Stop Behind the White Line
Logally Mandated Compliance
This rule is enforced by RTA 1988 section 36 and TSRGO schedule 14 parts 1 and 4 .
Drivers must not move forward over the white line while the red light is showing .
PROCEEDING ON GREEN
Exception for Right Turns
Verify Junction Clearance
Drivers are permitted to enter the junction on green if they are moving into a position to wait for a right - hand turn .
Only move forward on a green signal if there is sufficient room to clear the junction entirely and safely .
Treat as an Unmarked Junction
If traffic lights are not working , the intersection must be approached as if no markings or signals exist .
SIGNAL FAILURE CONTINGENCY
Proceed with Great Care
In the event of signal failure , drivers most exercise extreme caution while navigating the junction without automated guidance .
