Box junctions. These have criss-cross yellow lines painted on the road (see ‘Road markings’). You MUST NOT enter the box until your exit road or lane is clear. However, you may enter the box and wait when you want to turn right, and are only stopped from doing so by oncoming traffic, or by other vehicles waiting to turn right. At signalled roundabouts you MUST NOT enter the box unless you can cross over it completely without stopping.

THE PRIMARY RULE
IDENTIFYING THE BOX JUNCTION
Recognized by distinctive criss - cross yellow lines painted across the road surface at intersections .
THE RIGHT - TURN EXCEPTION
WHEN YOU CAN ENTER AND WAIT
You may enter the box and wait if you intend to turn right but are prevented from completing the turn by oncoming traffic .
SIGNALLED ROUNDABOUTS
THE ' EXIT CLEAR ' REQUIREMENT
You MUST NOT enter the yellow box unless your exit road or lane is entirely clear of traffic .
CROSS WITHOUT STOPPING
At signalled roundabouts , the rule is more absolute : you MUST NOT enter the box unless you can cross over it completely without stopping .
LEGAL BASIS
These regulations are strictly enforced under Law TSRGD ( Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions ) schedule 9 , parts 7 and 8 .
WAITING BEHIND OTHER VEHICLES: Drivers are also permitted to wait inside the box if they are stopped by other vehicles ahead of them that are also waiting to turn right .
NO WAITING ALLOWED
Unlike standard intersections , the right - turn waiting exception does not apply in the same way at signalled roundabouts ; the path must be clear for a continuous transit .
