On a dual carriageway with three or more lanes, you may use the middle lanes or the right-hand lane to overtake but you should return to the middle lanes and then the left-hand lane when it is safe to do so.

MULTI - LANE DUAL CARRIAGEWAY
Supporting Detail : This rule applies specifically to roads with three or more lanes of travel in one direction .
Step 1 : Overtaking
OVERTAKING PROCESS
When you need to pass slower vehicles , you may use the middle lanes or the right - hand lane to perform the overtake .
Step 2 : Return to Middle
Once the overtake is finished and it is safe to do so , you should first return to the middle lanes .
Step 3 : Return to Left
After returning to the middle , you must continue back to the left - hand lane when it is safe , maintaining proper lane discipline .
