Skids. Skidding is usually caused by the driver braking, accelerating or steering too harshly or driving too fast for the road conditions. If skidding occurs, remove the cause by releasing the brake pedal fully or easing off the accelerator. Turn the steering wheel in the direction of the skid. For example, if the rear of the vehicle skids to the right, steer immediately to the right to recover.

IDENTIFYING THE CAUSES

Harsh Driver Inputs

Skidding is most often caused by the driver braking , accelerating , or steering too harshly for the current environment .

Speed vs. Conditions: Driving too fast for specific road conditions ( such as wet or icy surfaces ) is a primary catalyst for losing traction .

1. Remove the Cause

Immediately release the brake pedal fully or ease off the accelerator to stop the force triggering the skid .

Directional Correction: If the rear of your vehicle skids to the right , you must steer immediately to the right to recover .

2. Steer Into the Skid: Turn the steering wheel in the same direction that the rear of the vehicle is sliding .
