THE EYESIGHT STANDARD
THE 20 - METRE RULE
Drivers must be able to read a vehicle number plate from a distance of 20 metres in good daylight .
MANDATORY USE OF CORRECTIVE LENSES
DAYLIGHT REQUIREMENT
CONSTANT USE REQUIRED
If you need glasses or contact lenses to read the number plate at the required distance , you MUST wear them at all times while driving .
LEGAL ENFORCEMENT
Required reading distance increases slightly to 20.5 metres
COMPLIANCE IS MANDATORY The use of corrective lenses is a legal requirement for those who cannot meet the distance standard unalded .
POLICE TESTING POWERS
Under the law , the police have the power to require any driver to undertake a roadside eyesight test .
LEGAL AUTHORITIES: These requirements are governed by the Road Traffic Act 1988 ( Section 96 ) and Motor Vehicles ( Driving Licences ) Regulations .
