Rule 71 : Mastering Traffic Light Junctions for Cyclists
Red Means STOP
At traffic light junctions and cycle - only crossings , you MUST NOT cross the stop line when the lights are red .
Advanced Stop Lines ( ASLs )
These areas are designed to enable you to position yourself ahead of other traffic while waiting for the signal to change .
Crossing the First Line
When the traffic lights are red , cyclists are permitted to cross the first stop line to enter the reservoir area .
Stopping at the Final Line You MUST NOT cross the final stop line ( the one closest to the junction ) until the light turns green .
Two - Line Rule
At traffic light junctions and cycle - only crossings .

These rules are mandated under the Road Traffic Act 1988 Section 36 and TSRGD Schedule 14 Part 1 .
