Walking Along the Road ( No Pavement )
The Green Cross Code ( Steps A - E )
Keep to the Right - Hand Side If there is ne pavoment, walk on the right so you can see and be seen by encoming traffic.
Use subways , footbridges , or marked crossings ( Zebra , Pelican , Toucan , Puffin ) ; avoid crossing between parked cars , on blind bends , or near the brow of a hill .
B : Stop Before the Kerb
Stand where you can see appreaching traffie but do not get too close to the vehicles .
A : Find a Safe Place to Cross
Walk in Single File On narrow reads or in poor lighting , stay close to the side of the road and walk one behind the other .
Navigating Sharp Bends
It is safer to cross to the other side well before a sharp right - hand bend to ensure drivers see you , then cross back after the bend .
C : Look All Around and Listen
Traffic can come from any direction ; listen carefully as you might hear vehicles before you see them .
D : Wait for a Safe Gap
If traffic is coming , let it pass and do not cross until there is plenty of time , even if vehicles seem for away .
E : Walk Straight Across
When safe , walk ( do not run ) straight across the road while contnaring to look and listen for traffic , including cyclists and motorcyclists .
Safety Tips for Parents & Carers
Children Learn by Example
Parents should always use the Code in full when with children to model safe behavior .
Judging Speed and Distance Many children cannot accurately judge how fast a vehicle is moving , so they should not be out alone until they fully understand the Code .
Never Cross Diagonally
Both Rule 7A and 7E naglicitly state that pedestrians must walk straight across the road , not at an angle .
