Keep to the Right - Hand Side
Walk on the right so you can see and react to oncoming traffic .
Keep to the Left
Unlike individuals , large organized groups should keep to the left side of the road if no pavement is available .
Walk in Single File
Be prepared to walk one behind the other , especially on narrow roads , in poer light , or when traffic is heavy .
Position Dedicated Look - outs
Safety look - outs must be stationed at both the front
and the back of the group to monitor traffic .

Navigating Sharp Right - Hand Bends Cross to the other side well before a sharp right - hand bend so traffic can see you earlier ; cross back once the bend is cleared .
Wear High - Visibility Clothing
Look - outs should wear fluorescent clothes during the day and reflective gear at night ; people on the outside of the group should also use reflective wear .
Stay Close to the Edge
Always keep as close to the side of the road as possible to maximize the distance between yourself and vehicles .
Specific Lighting for Nighttime
At night , the front look - out must show a white light , while the rear look - out must show a red light .
