Highway Code Rule 21

📖 Rule 21 Full Regulations & Explanation

Rule 21 :

Navigating Signal - Controlled Crossings Safely

USING PEDESTRIAN SIGNALS

Start Crossing on the Green Figure

Only begin your crossing when the green pedestrian figure is clearly displayed .

Continue if the Signal Changes

If you are already in the road and the green figure goes out , proceed to the other side without delay ; there is timed buffer to reach safety .

Applicable Crossing Types

These rules apply at standard traffic lights as well as specialized Puffin and Pelican crossings .

CROSSINGS WITHOUT PEDESTRIAN SIGNALS

CONSTANT VIGILANCE & HAZARDS

Wait for Red Lights and Stopped Traffic

If no pedestrian light is provided , do not cross until the traffic lights turn red and ail approaching vehicles have come to a complete stop .

Check for Turning Traffic

Even when the way seems clear , keep looking and specifically check for vehicles that may be turning the corner into your path .

Multiple Lane Awareness

Be aware that traffic lights can allow movement in specific lanes while others remain stopped ; do not assume the whole road is safe just because one lane has halted .
